Mia O’Brien, a 23-year-old from Liverpool, has been jailed for life in Dubai. Reports describe ‘hellish’ prison conditions and her family’s heartbreak.
A 23-year-old British woman, Mia O’Brien from Liverpool, is reportedly serving a life sentence in Dubai after what her family describes as a “very stupid mistake.”
Her mother, Danielle, revealed that Mia had fallen in with the wrong crowd and is now facing the consequences abroad. A GoFundMe campaign launched to support legal fees raised about $950 before being removed for violating platform rules.
Danielle expressed her heartbreak, writing:

“Mia has been given a life sentence over in Dubai, and she is now in central prison. I haven’t seen my daughter since last October.”
‘Hellish’ Prison Conditions
O’Brien was previously held in Dubai Central Prison, a facility long criticized by human rights organizations. Reports highlight poor sanitation, lack of medical care, and overcrowding. Former inmates have described the experience as nothing short of “hellish.”
According to advocacy group Detained in Dubai, prisoners often sleep on dirty blankets on the floor, and uniforms are restricted to plain white. Access to basic necessities is minimal, and beds are considered a privilege rather than a guarantee.
David Haigh, a former Leeds United managing director imprisoned in Dubai for nearly two years, shared his experience:
“The only way to describe being in prison in Dubai is hell. The stench, the dirt, the heat, and the lack of information — it never leaves you.”
Haigh alleged that he and other inmates endured beatings, torture, and even sexual assault at the hands of guards. He recalled seeing fellow prisoners violently abused, describing it as more disturbing than his own mistreatment.

What a Life Sentence Means in Dubai
In Dubai, a “life sentence” does not always mean imprisonment until death. In many cases, it amounts to 25 years behind bars, though this can vary depending on the crime.
The nature of O’Brien’s alleged offense has not been publicly disclosed by her family.
Fundraiser Shut Down
The fundraising page created for Mia’s defense was taken down by GoFundMe. A spokesperson explained:
“It was removed because it violates Term 9 of our Prohibited Conduct section, which forbids raising funds for certain alleged crimes.”
For now, Mia’s family says they are devastated and struggling to cope with her imprisonment.
