A 23-year-old British woman, Mia O’Brien, has been sentenced to life in prison in Dubai after what her family describes as a “very stupid mistake.” The young woman, from Liverpool, is currently being held at a central prison in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), although the specific crime for which she was sentenced remains undisclosed.

Dubai is known for its strict laws, and tourists are often cautioned to be mindful of the country’s legal system. O’Brien’s case has shocked both her family and the public, as she is facing a sentence of 25 years, which is typically considered a life sentence in the UAE.

O’Brien’s mother, Danielle, shared her distress in an interview with The Daily Mail, explaining that her daughter had been transferred to another prison following her sentencing. “She’s just been transferred to another prison after getting a life sentence. It’s been a massive shock,” Danielle said. The mother also revealed that her daughter had never been involved in any criminal activity before, calling the situation a tragic mistake.

To help cover the legal fees and travel expenses so that the family can visit O’Brien in Dubai, Danielle set up a GoFundMe page. The fundraiser raised nearly $950 before it was unexpectedly deleted. In the page’s description, Danielle explained that Mia, who had been studying law at university, had been “mixed up in the wrong so-called friends” and made an error in judgment that would now cost her dearly.

“I haven’t seen my daughter since last October. Mia is only 23 years old and has never done a bad thing in her life,” Danielle wrote in the fundraiser. The funds raised were intended to support Mia’s legal costs and to cover travel expenses for her family to visit her in Dubai.

The GoFundMe campaign was removed for reasons that remain unclear, though nearly $950 had been raised by the time it was taken down.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has expressed their support for Mia’s family, confirming that they are in contact with the local authorities in Dubai. “We are supporting the family of a British woman detained in the UAE and are in contact with the local authorities,” a spokesperson for the FCO said.

In the UAE, life sentences can be handed down for serious offenses such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, murder or attempted murder, and terrorism-related crimes. The FCO also warns that drug-related offenses in the UAE carry severe penalties, including the possibility of the death penalty.
