Mackenzie Phillips opens up about her alleged 10-year incestuous relationship with her father, John Phillips, and her family’s reactions to her controversial memoir.

Mackenzie Phillips, the actor and daughter of John Phillips, the famous frontman of the ’60s band The Mamas & The Papas, made shocking revelations in her 2009 memoir High on Arrival. In her book, Phillips shared the heartbreaking story of an alleged 10-year incestuous relationship with her father, which has caused deep division within her family.

At the heart of her memoir, Phillips claims that in 1979, the night before she was supposed to marry a member of the Rolling Stones’ entourage, she woke up from a blackout to find herself in a sexual encounter with her own father. She writes that when she confronted him about the assault, he denied it was rape, instead calling it “making love.”

This revelation has torn the Phillips family apart. Her stepmother at the time, Genevieve Waite, as well as John Phillips’ second wife, Michelle Phillips, have questioned the validity of Mackenzie’s accusations. They maintain that no matter how drunk or drugged John Phillips may have been, he was “incapable” of such an act.

Mackenzie’s half-sister, Chynna Phillips Baldwin, however, has been a steadfast supporter of her sister. Chynna has pointed to a 1997 phone call, made 11 years after the alleged abuse ended, as evidence that Mackenzie’s claims were true. In a conversation with her sister on Chynna’s YouTube channel, Chynna admitted that while she loved their father and admired his musical genius, there was a darker side to him, describing him as both “amazing” and “a monster.”

Mackenzie responded, calling their father’s darker side “very, very dark,” and shared how she had come to terms with the trauma through forgiveness. Despite the intense criticism and online trolling she has faced for forgiving her father, Mackenzie believes that forgiveness is essential for her peace, stating, “Forgiveness is for me, not for the other person.”

Years after the initial assault, Mackenzie revealed on Oprah’s show that her father’s abuse continued during their time touring together. She described waking up after drug-fueled events to find herself in compromising situations, but was able to push the memories aside, telling herself to “not think, don’t look, just keep going.” This went on for years, and Mackenzie said the abuse became frequent enough to impact her deeply.

She later described the relationship as somewhat consensual, describing it as a form of “Stockholm Syndrome,” where she began to love her abuser. Mackenzie shared that the abuse only stopped when she became pregnant but was unsure of who the father was.
