Magda Szubanski, the cherished Australian actress best known for her iconic roles in Kath & Kim and the Babe films, has shared an emotional update from her hospital bed as she continues her brave battle against stage 4 cancer.
The 64-year-old star recently posted a heartfelt video on Instagram, showing herself smiling while undergoing chemotherapy. In the video, Szubanski expressed her gratitude toward a 10-year-old fan, Annabella, who dressed up as Szubanski’s famous Kath & Kim character, Sharon Strzelecki, for Book Week.
“This is a special shout-out to 10-year-old Annabella in Adelaide. Thank you so much for your impression of Sharon Strzelecki. I’m in here having chemo, and it really cheered me up,” said Szubanski, visibly moved by the kind gesture. “I’m really touched, and that was a beautiful thing to do. Thank you, my sweet. Lots of love to you.”
The actress added in her Instagram caption, “Chemo is smacking me around right now,” giving her followers an honest update on the physical toll her treatment is taking.
In May, Szubanski revealed that she had been diagnosed with stage 4 mantle cell lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. The diagnosis came after a routine breast screening revealed swollen lymph nodes. Despite the challenging news, Szubanski has remained positive, acknowledging her strong support network.
“It’s one of the nasty ones, unfortunately,” she said in a previous update. “The good thing is I’m surrounded by beautiful friends, family, and an incredible medical support team. Honestly, we have the best in the world here in Australia, particularly in Melbourne. I feel very fortunate.”
Szubanski also expressed optimism about the ongoing medical advancements in cancer treatment. “New treatments keep coming down the pipeline all the time,” she said, giving her followers hope for the future.
In her more recent update, Szubanski reminded fans that her immune system is compromised due to her treatment. “Please keep a distance though because I will be very immunocompromised,” she said. “So I can’t hug no more. Don’t hug me, kiss me, or breathe anywhere near me! Wave enthusiastically from a safe distance and know I love you madly.”
