Donald Trump cancels Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection after his election win. Read the latest update on Harris’ safety and the new protection arrangements amid her memoir tour.
In a significant move, former President Donald Trump has officially revoked Secret Service protection for Kamala Harris, the former Vice President of the United States. The decision comes after Harris and Trump faced off in the intense 2024 election battle, which saw Trump emerge victorious and begin his second term in January 2025.
Typically, former vice presidents are entitled to Secret Service protection for six months after the election, but due to security concerns, Joe Biden extended Harris’ protection for an additional six months. However, as of September 1, 2025, Trump has chosen to end that extension.

A letter was issued announcing the discontinuation of Harris’ Secret Service protection, stating: “You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”
A senior advisor to Harris confirmed the news, expressing gratitude for the Secret Service’s previous dedication to her safety: “The vice president is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” the advisor said.
Despite the loss of federal security, Harris will continue to receive protection from the California Highway Patrol as she embarks on a nationwide tour for her upcoming memoir, 107 Days, set to be released in September. The book will delve into her presidential campaign and reflections on the 2024 election.
The protection shift was confirmed after discussions between California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. Authorities emphasized that the arrangement would help ensure Harris’ safety, especially given the potential threats surrounding her public appearances.

In response to Trump’s decision, Mayor Bass criticized the move, calling it another example of political retaliation. She stated, “This is another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation, including the revoking of security clearances and more. This puts the former Vice President in danger, and I look forward to working with the governor to make sure Vice President Harris is safe in Los Angeles.”
This decision comes amid speculation about Harris’ future political plans. Earlier this year, Harris announced that she would be taking a break from politics, focusing on supporting Democratic candidates and engaging with the American people. In an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Harris confirmed that she would not run for governor of California, despite being a popular choice among early voters.
Harris’ move away from active politics has sparked ongoing interest in her next steps, with many wondering what role she might play in the future of the Democratic Party.
