A young man, once bent over at a 180-degree angle due to ankylosing spondylitis, stands upright for the first time after groundbreaking surgery. Learn about his inspiring journey and medical breakthrough.
A young man from Shandong, China, whose body was contorted into the shape of a ‘Z’ due to a rare and severe condition, has stood up straight for the first time in his life.
Jiang Yanchen, now 21, has been living with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a long-term inflammatory disease that affects the spine and other parts of the body. This condition caused Jiang’s neck to bend backward progressively, severely limiting his movement and causing unimaginable pain.

Over time, the condition made it almost impossible for Jiang to walk, eat, or even breathe comfortably, as his lung capacity had diminished to just 20% of what was considered normal. His head and bottom were mere inches apart, a position that left him in constant agony. During his school years, he was forced to kneel or lie down to manage the pain.
For years, Jiang lacked access to the proper medical care to address his condition. However, in 2023, a groundbreaking series of surgeries changed his life forever. Over two years, he underwent four major surgeries, each designed to realign his spine and other affected areas. Doctors performed complex procedures, including breaking bones in his lumbar, cervical spine, hips, and chest.
The final surgery, which took 12 hours, was reported by the Global Times to have corrected his spine by a staggering 170 degrees. After the procedure, Jiang was able to lie flat on his bed for the first time in years. His doctors, led by orthopedic surgeon Liang Yijian, called it the “world’s first successful 180-degree spinal orthopedic surgery.”
Jiang’s rehabilitation process was grueling, but after two months of intense physical therapy, he finally took his first upright steps. In an emotional moment captured during a live stream, Jiang stood tall for the first time, expressing his joy and relief. He said, “All the pain is worth it when I see myself more like an ordinary person. I feel reborn.”

Jiang’s story spread across the internet, with users on Reddit expressing their awe and admiration for his resilience and the groundbreaking medical advancements that made his recovery possible. One user commented, “I can’t imagine the pain this guy went through before and after, and especially the recovery. Mad props!” Others marveled at the progress of modern medicine, with one writing, “It’s mind-blowing what we can do.”
Now that his spine has been realigned, Jiang’s heart and lung functions have returned to normal, and he is expected to return to university this month, where he can continue living a life that was once unimaginable.
This incredible recovery is a testament to the power of medical science and the strength of the human spirit.
