Three hikers, Matthew Schoenecker, Matthew Anthony, and Valentino Creus, tragically lost their lives after jumping into Rattlesnake Falls in California. The difficult terrain and weather conditions hampered rescue efforts, but their bodies were recovered days later.
Authorities have confirmed the recovery of three hikers who tragically lost their lives after jumping into Rattlesnake Falls in California. The victims, Matthew Schoenecker from Los Angeles, Matthew Anthony from New York City, and Valentino Creus, also from Los Angeles, were part of a hiking group exploring the remote Soda Springs area on Wednesday, June 18.
According to reports, the three men entered the water at Rattlesnake Falls but failed to resurface. The remaining members of their hiking group, stranded in the tough terrain, had to be rescued by helicopter the following day.
Search and Rescue Efforts
Placer County Sheriff’s Office responded to the initial emergency call around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, immediately launching a large-scale search and rescue mission. Multiple agencies, including the Sheriff’s Dive Team, CAL FIRE’s Technical Rescue Team, and a CHP helicopter unit, worked together to find the missing hikers.
“This is an extremely remote and rugged area, which has made rescue efforts especially challenging,” authorities stated at the time.
The difficult weather conditions led to a temporary suspension of the search on Thursday. However, rescue operations resumed with limited support on Friday, June 21, and a full-scale search began again on Sunday, June 22, once the conditions improved enough to facilitate enhanced equipment and additional support.

The Recovery
That same day, the sheriff’s office confirmed the recovery of all three bodies. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to their families, friends, and all those affected by this tragic loss,” the department shared in a public statement.
Juan Heredia, a volunteer diver, shared a moving account of the recovery efforts on Facebook. Describing the treacherous three-hour hike to reach the falls, he spoke about the relentless force of the water as he dived to locate the bodies. “The waterfall was brutal. It kept pushing me down… but I wasn’t leaving without bringing those three souls home to their families,” Heredia wrote.
Heredia added that without their intervention, the bodies may not have surfaced for weeks. “Three beautiful souls have been recovered. They can now be laid to rest, and their families can begin to heal.”
The Aftermath
The tragedy has left a profound impact on all involved, including law enforcement, volunteers, and local residents. The loss of these three young men has created an emotional ripple, with many mourning the untimely deaths. As the community begins to process the tragedy, efforts continue to support the grieving families.
