“A man contracted a severe infection after his dog bit him in bed, leading to necrotizing fasciitis. He nearly lost his arm and faced organ damage, but he’s now recovering after intense medical treatment.”
A man from Australia came dangerously close to losing his arm after an innocent moment with his dog turned into a life-threatening medical emergency. While many pet owners share their beds with their furry companions, one man’s experience serves as a shocking reminder of the risks involved.

How the Infection Started
The incident began when the man was asleep with his dog in his bed and accidentally rolled over, startling the animal. In response, the dog bit the man on his arm. While the man initially dismissed the bite, things took a turn for the worse when his arm began to swell and develop pus-filled spots.
Initially, the man didn’t seek medical attention, but when his symptoms worsened, he went to the hospital. Upon admission, his blood pressure dropped dangerously low, a possible sign of sepsis, a life-threatening condition.
Diagnosis: Necrotizing Fasciitis
After further tests, doctors diagnosed the man with necrotizing fasciitis, a severe and rapidly progressing bacterial infection. The condition occurs when bacteria infect a wound, often leading to tissue death, and is extremely rare but potentially fatal. The NHS explains that symptoms can develop within hours and may include intense pain, swelling, fever, and blisters.
The man explained on Reddit: “My dog only just got the edge of my wrist with one deep canine tooth wound. I was told at the time that the bacteria that caused my necrotizing fasciitis lives on human skin and, if any wound is deep enough, there’s roughly a 1 in 10,000 chance that it will enter your system and cause an infection.”
The Fight for Survival
The infection caused sepsis, and the man was placed into a medically induced coma for five days. His doctors were able to save his arm, but not without significant challenges. The infection also led to organ damage, and the man spent months recovering from septic shock. He explained the impact on his life, saying, “I was left in a wheelchair for a while, then crutches for over a year. I’m currently still on crutches.”

Despite the long recovery process, he remains thankful that his kidney function appears to be intact, though his heart suffered only minor damage. “My brain is still a question. I’m slower than I was and struggling with memory a bit, but I’m still pretty medicated,” he added.
Where the Infection Likely Came From
Interestingly, the doctors noted that the infection likely came from the man’s own skin rather than his dog’s mouth. “They told me it was almost certainly not from his mouth but from my skin,” he said.
Despite the traumatic experience, the man still has his dog, whom he refers to as “a good boi.” He explained that his dog had a rough time when he was hospitalized and in a coma, but he’s happy to have him by his side as he continues to recover.
What Is Necrotizing Fasciitis?
Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but dangerous condition, often referred to as a “flesh-eating” infection. It occurs when bacteria, such as Group A Streptococcus or other types, enter the body through a cut, scrape, or even a bite. The infection spreads rapidly, destroying tissue and causing severe complications like sepsis.
Early symptoms include severe pain, swelling, fever, and dark blotches or blisters on the skin. If left untreated, necrotizing fasciitis can result in death or severe long-term damage, which is why it’s critical to seek immediate medical care if symptoms arise after a dog bite or any injury.
