“The family of Michael Sheehan has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Tesla after alleging that his Cybertruck’s battery caused a fatal inferno, leading to horrific injuries. Details of the tragic incident and lawsuit.”
The family of Michael Sheehan, 47, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Tesla, claiming that he tragically died in an inferno following a crash in his Cybertruck. According to the lawsuit, Sheehan was trapped inside the vehicle when the battery system, described as “hyper volatile,” went into “thermal runaway,” causing a fire that allegedly reached temperatures of 5,000 degrees, resulting in the disintegration of his bones.

The Tragic Accident
The incident occurred when Sheehan’s Tesla Cybertruck swerved off the road and hit a culvert in Texas. Reports suggest that the crash itself was survivable, but the explosion of the vehicle’s battery and the ensuing fire trapped Sheehan inside, leading to his horrific death. His family now claims that Tesla’s vehicle design was flawed and that the truck’s electronic doors made it impossible for Sheehan to escape after the crash.
Attorney S. Scott West, representing the Sheehan family, described the extreme nature of the death, stating, “He was eight inches shorter in length than he was before he burned. That’s thermal fracture.”
Claims Against Tesla’s Design
The lawsuit accuses Tesla of “defective design” and claims that the Cybertruck’s electronic doors are difficult to open once the power is cut. It also states that the manual door handles are “unreasonably difficult to locate in an emergency.” The lawsuit argues that these design flaws contributed to Sheehan being trapped in the vehicle during a situation where escape should have been possible.

West further elaborated on the excruciating nature of Sheehan’s death, comparing the pain to that of burn unit patients who beg doctors to let them die due to the intensity of the suffering. “It’s horrific,” he said. “The nerves are literally exposed to everything.”
Remembering Michael Sheehan
Michael Sheehan is remembered by his family and friends as a brilliant man with an exceptional career in healthcare. An obituary for Sheehan states that he had a remarkable career, progressing from RN to RNFA and FNP, with much of his work focused on aortic surgery, urology, and cardiothoracic transplantation.
In addition to his professional achievements, Sheehan had a passion for cooking, animals, hiking, and snowboarding. His obituary describes him as someone who was “absolutely brilliant, and admired by many.” His family deeply mourns his loss, describing the devastation they feel from his untimely passing.
Tesla’s Response
At the time of writing, Tesla has not yet responded to the lawsuit. The incident, which has sparked outrage and concern over the safety of electric vehicles, raises significant questions about Tesla’s safety protocols and the design of its vehicles, particularly in relation to crashworthiness and fire hazards.
