A Ukrainian soldier shares his harrowing survival story after enduring brutal torture by Russian troops. Vladislav survived being buried alive and describes the atrocities he experienced. Read his terrifying account.
In the midst of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, the horrors faced by soldiers on both sides are becoming increasingly apparent. Ukraine, embroiled in a devastating conflict since February 2022, has seen over 13,000 civilian deaths and nearly 34,000 injuries, according to Statista. Thousands of soldiers from both sides have also lost their lives, with a reported 500,000 casualties in the first 18 months of the war, as noted by the New York Times.
Amidst the carnage, there have been disturbing reports of torture and mistreatment of prisoners, particularly at the hands of Russian forces. These claims have gained traction, especially after a Ukrainian journalist’s body was allegedly returned home with missing internal organs.
Now, one Ukrainian soldier, Vladislav, has bravely come forward with a chilling account of the torture he endured during his captivity, shedding light on the gruesome reality many soldiers face in this brutal conflict.

Vladislav’s Harrowing Experience
Vladislav, a 33-year-old National Guardsman, was captured by Russian troops after his brigade lost control of a position near Pokrovsk. In a shocking series of events, Vladislav was subjected to severe torture. He was thrown into a pit with seven other soldiers, his throat cut, and left for dead.
The Russians allegedly believed him and the other soldiers to be dead, throwing garbage on top of their bodies to conceal them. Despite the brutal injuries, Vladislav survived. After five days in agony, he crawled to safety and made it to a Ukrainian base.
Vladislav’s wife, Victoria, spoke to the Ukrainian outlet Suspilny on his behalf, as Vladislav is unable to speak due to the severe damage to his throat. Victoria shared the horrifying details of what happened, which Vladislav had documented in a diary.
Torture Details Revealed
Victoria explained how Vladislav was captured and taken to a basement where two Russian soldiers subjected him to brutal mockery. The soldiers, who had captured others before Vladislav, had committed unspeakable acts of violence, including gouging out eyes, cutting off ears, noses, lips, and even male organs.
Vladislav’s survival is nothing short of miraculous. After being thrown into the pit with his hands tied, Vladislav managed to find a broken bottle, which he used to free himself. The injuries he sustained were severe, and his wounds began to rot due to the immense loss of blood.

A Long Road to Recovery
Vladislav was eventually found and transported to a medical facility in Dnipropetrovsk on August 17, in critical condition. Doctors immediately performed surgery on him, and they are working tirelessly to ensure that he will regain his ability to talk and breathe without assistance.
Vladislav’s doctor described his injuries as catastrophic, with infections threatening his life due to the severe trauma he endured. However, with the right medical care, there is hope that he will recover, though the road ahead will be long and difficult.
The Bigger Picture: Torture and Atrocities of War
Vladislav’s story is not isolated. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has seen an alarming number of reports of torture, violence, and brutality, underscoring the harsh reality faced by soldiers and civilians caught in the crossfire. As the war continues, it is essential to acknowledge and address the human suffering that goes beyond the battlefield.
Vladislav’s survival story serves as a testament to his resilience, but it also paints a grim picture of the atrocities being committed in this ongoing conflict. His courage in sharing his story will hopefully bring further attention to the horrors faced by those who endure the brutalities of war.
