In the aftermath of the tragic school shooting in Minneapolis this week, it’s easy for the focus to shift to the shooter. However, it’s the innocent victims—the lives taken too soon—that should be remembered.
This week, Fletcher Merkel, an 8-year-old, and Harper Moyski, a 10-year-old, tragically lost their lives when Robin Westman opened fire outside Annunciation Catholic Church and School on Wednesday.
Remembering Fletcher Merkel
Fletcher’s father, Jesse Merkel, recently gave a powerful tribute to his son. His voice cracked with emotion as he shared the devastation of losing an 8-year-old full of life and potential.
“Yesterday, a coward decided to take our eight-year-old son, Fletcher, away from us,” Jesse Merkel said at a press conference. “Please remember Fletcher for the person he was and not the way his life was tragically cut short.”

Fletcher was a vibrant child who loved cooking, sports, and fishing. He was devoted to his family and always eager to make lasting memories with them. Jesse described Fletcher as “bright, joyful, and deeply loved,” urging everyone to cherish their own children.
“We will never get to hold him, talk to him, or watch him grow into the wonderful young man he was meant to be,” Jesse added. “Give your kids an extra hug and kiss today. Fletcher, you’ll always be with us.”
Honoring Harper Moyski
Ten-year-old Harper Moyski was also a victim of the senseless attack. She had just attended the school’s welcome Mass for the new academic year when tragedy struck. Harper’s family has paid a heartfelt tribute to her memory, describing her as a bright light who brought joy to everyone around her.
“Our hearts are broken not only as parents, but also for Harper’s younger sister, who is struggling to cope with this immense loss,” the family shared. “Words cannot fully express the depth of our pain.”

The family urged change in honor of Harper’s memory, stating: “While our immediate focus is on Harper’s memory, we believe it is crucial that this tragedy fuels action. No family should ever experience such pain.”
They called for stronger steps to combat gun violence and address the growing mental health crisis in America. “Harper’s story should inspire action, not just be another tragic statistic.”
The Aftermath: 18 Wounded, 1 Critical
The shooting left 18 others injured, including 15 children and three elderly adults. One victim remains in critical condition, according to doctors.
The suspect, Robin Westman, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities confirmed that Westman had legally purchased three firearms: a shotgun, a rifle, and a pistol. Over 100 rifle rounds were found at the scene.
While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, investigators believe Westman posted a manifesto on Facebook shortly before carrying out the shooting.
