Burger King clarifies after Nykia Hamilton, a single mother, was fired for attendance issues despite managing an entire restaurant solo. Find out the company’s stance and public response.
Fast food giant Burger King has responded to a viral story involving Nykia Hamilton, a single mother who worked tirelessly alone at a restaurant in Columbia, South Carolina. Her heroic efforts in July, where she managed every station by herself for 12 hours, earned her both admiration and controversy.
Hamilton’s situation went viral after a customer filmed her juggling multiple tasks, including preparing food, working the drive-thru, and handling the front desk. The video quickly gained traction, highlighting her resilience and dedication despite being overwhelmed.

However, things took a turn when Hamilton revealed she was fired for repeatedly being late due to childcare issues. In a TikTok video, she expressed her frustration, saying, “My kids come first. Y’all don’t pay for no babysitter or nothing. I’m already aggravated, I’m already depressed.”
Following her dismissal, a GoFundMe campaign was created to support her, which has raised over $108,000 as of now.
Burger King’s Response:
Burger King issued a statement clarifying the situation. A spokesperson confirmed Hamilton’s termination, stating that such decisions are made by franchisees who own and operate individual Burger King restaurants. In this case, it was due to attendance issues, according to the franchisee.

However, Burger King expressed concern about the restaurant’s staffing issues, acknowledging that no employee should be expected to manage a restaurant alone. They also clarified that their operational policy requires more than one team member per shift, which was evidently not followed in this instance.
“We’re disappointed that our policy wasn’t followed,” the spokesperson said. “No team member should ever be left to run a restaurant alone.”
The fast food chain reassured the public that they are committed to providing adequate staffing and support in all restaurants to ensure employees’ well-being and to meet customer expectations.
