Elon Musk reveals why, despite his $500 billion net worth, he continues to work tirelessly on his mission to expand humanity’s reach beyond Earth. His unexpected answer sheds light on his personal philosophy and drive.
When you’re worth a staggering $500 billion, stepping back to relax on a private island might seem like the next logical move. However, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has a very different plan. Despite his immense wealth, Musk is still fully committed to his work — and his response to why he continues is both philosophical and deeply personal.
In a recent appearance on the Tesla Beat podcast, Musk was asked why he’s still so driven to work, especially when it seems like he has more than enough money to retire comfortably. His answer was far from what most would expect.
A Search for Meaning
Musk opened up about an “existential crisis” he faced as a teenager, explaining that during that time, he struggled to find meaningful answers in religious texts or philosophical works. Despite his wealth and success, the question of life’s purpose was something that continued to challenge him.

“I think it’s a good question you asked because it goes to, like – at a foundational level, what is my philosophy? And why does it lead to this conclusion?” Musk said during the interview. His journey to understanding his life’s mission took a turn after reading a particular book that helped him find clarity.
A Comedy Sci-Fi Novel Changes Everything
That book was The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Musk explained that the novel’s take on the meaning of life struck a chord with him. Adams, known for blending humor with deep philosophical themes, suggested that the question of life’s meaning itself might be flawed.
“The question is not, ‘What’s the meaning of life?’” Musk said, quoting Adams. Instead, the message that resonated with Musk was that the universe itself is the answer, but we must figure out the right questions to ask.
Expanding Humanity’s Consciousness

For Musk, the key takeaway was that humanity’s purpose is to explore and expand consciousness — not just on Earth, but across the stars. He believes that by becoming a multi-planetary and ultimately a multi-stellar species, we’ll be able to ask the right questions and understand the nature of the universe.
“The more we can expand the scope and scale of consciousness, the better we can understand what questions to ask about the answer that is the universe,” Musk explained. “The more we can expand consciousness, become a multi-planet species, ultimately a multi-stellar species, we have a chance of figuring out what the hell’s going on.”
This drive to expand beyond Earth is what keeps Musk pushing forward, despite already having accomplished so much. He’s not just building Tesla and SpaceX to make money; he’s working towards a vision for the future of humanity.
No Retirement in Sight
So, despite the overwhelming temptation to retire and enjoy his riches, Musk’s work isn’t over. His mission to make humanity a multi-planetary species is a driving force that keeps him going. According to Musk, only when we’ve populated other planets will it make sense to consider slowing down.
For now, Musk’s goal remains clear: push the boundaries of human exploration, both on Earth and beyond, in an effort to answer the fundamental questions of existence.
