One Tesla driver has revealed just how much money he’s saving after switching from a gas car to an electric vehicle (EV), and the difference is staggering. As Tesla owners continue to share their excitement about the financial benefits of driving an electric car, this driver’s savings highlight why so many people are making the switch.

Tesla vs. Gas: The Shocking Cost Comparison

The YouTuber EV Kiwi explained in a video how he charges his Tesla Model 3 mostly at home using off-peak electricity rates, a simple yet effective way to keep costs down. He shared his experience charging the vehicle for a full year, covering 13,256 km (8,237 miles). About half of his total charging was done at home, with 93% of that during off-peak hours, leading to a total annual cost of just $170 USD for charging—equating to just $14 per month.

In contrast, the YouTuber shared that before getting his Tesla, he was spending around $41 a month on gasoline. He then went on to break down the cost of gas if he had driven his gas car instead. With gas prices in New Zealand at 2.77 NZD per litre, he would have needed 1,233 litres of fuel to travel the same distance, costing him an eye-watering $3,416 NZD.

The actual amount spent to run his Tesla was a mere fraction of that, coming to $285 NZD ($448 NZD total). This meant the driver saved a massive $2,698 NZD that year. The cost-saving difference is huge, and it highlights why many are considering the switch to electric.

The Financial Benefits of Driving Electric

Many people fear that switching to an electric car could result in high electricity bills, but this driver’s experience shows that’s far from the case. By charging during off-peak hours and using home charging stations, the cost of running an EV is much lower than maintaining a gas-powered vehicle. The Tesla Model 3’s low annual charging cost and impressive savings are something that’s resonating with EV owners and potential buyers alike.
