A harrowing mass shooting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, left at least four people dead, with several others injured. The attack, which took place on Sunday morning, unfolded when the gunman, later identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, drove a vehicle through the doors of the church before opening fire on the congregation.
The Attack and Heroic Actions of Churchgoers
Sanford, a former Marine who served between 2004 and 2008, was confronted by police after killing at least four individuals and setting fire to the church. The fire caused significant damage to the building, with plumes of smoke rising over the scene, though the blaze was ultimately extinguished.
Authorities reported that ten gunshot victims were transported to local hospitals, one of whom was confirmed dead. Police Chief William Renye praised the bravery of the churchgoers, who acted quickly to shield the children in attendance and move them to safety. “I’d also like to acknowledge the heroism of not only the first responders but the people inside the church who were shielding the children and moving them to safety,” Renye said.

The Gunman and His Motive
Sanford, who was deployed to Iraq during his military service, died after a stand-off with law enforcement. As of the evening of the attack, sources revealed that seven people were unaccounted for, though some may be survivors who have not yet contacted their families.
The FBI has taken charge of the investigation, labeling the incident an “act of targeted violence.” Reuben Coleman, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office, expressed the agency’s commitment to uncovering the motives behind the attack, stating, “This act of violence has no place in our state or anywhere else in our country.”
The Aftermath and Ongoing Investigation
While the situation remains fluid, Chief Renye confirmed that there could be more victims inside the church’s ruins. The investigation is ongoing, and the FBI is working to uncover all the facts and circumstances surrounding this tragic event. Authorities are urging survivors and witnesses to come forward.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this tragic time.
