Jennifer Lopez has spoken candidly about her split from Ben Affleck, describing the experience as both “embarrassing” and transformative. In a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Lopez, 56, reflected on the “tough” period following their divorce in August 2023, admitting that the separation marked a significant chapter in her life.
Lopez, who was promoting her new film Kiss of the Spider Woman, appeared on the show alongside her ex-husband. Affleck, 53, served as producer for the film, which is slated for release on October 10. During the 35-minute conversation with CBS host Lee Cowan, Lopez shared her personal struggles while working on the film amid her emotional turmoil.
A Tough Time for J-Lo
When asked how she managed to juggle her personal challenges with her professional commitments, Lopez answered, “Barely! It was tough, it was a tough time – it was a really tough time.” Despite the challenges, she credited Affleck with the success of the project, saying, “The movie wouldn’t have been made if it wasn’t for him and Artist Equity – and I will always give him that credit.”

Lopez went on to express her gratitude for being able to play the role she had always dreamed of, adding, “He allowed me to play the role I was born to play.”
Finding Refuge in Her Role
When asked if her acting role served as an escape from the emotional turmoil of her personal life, Lopez confessed, “Yes, 100 percent.” She explained that working on the film offered both joy and difficulty. “It was hard not to think about stuff, but it was like the best and the worst of times in a way,” she said. “Every moment on set, I was so happy, but back home, it was not great. It was like, how do I reconcile this? But you get through it.”
A Transformative Experience
Lopez then made a savage admission about how the divorce changed her. “And you know, honestly, I have to say it was the best thing that ever happened to me because it changed me… it didn’t change me – it helped me grow in a way that I needed to grow, become more self-aware.” She concluded, “I’m a different person now than I was last year, I think, a year-and-a-half ago.”
The Rollercoaster Love Story of Bennifer
Lopez and Affleck’s complicated love story goes back to 2002 when they were Hollywood’s “it” couple, affectionately known as “Bennifer.” After becoming engaged, they called off their wedding in 2004. Their romance was rekindled in 2021, nearly two decades later. In 2022, the couple tied the knot in a Las Vegas ceremony, followed by a larger celebration in Georgia. However, their marriage lasted less than a year. Lopez filed for divorce on their second wedding anniversary, with court papers revealing that they had actually separated a year earlier, in April 2023.
