Donald Trump is accused of breaking royal etiquette for the second time during his UK state visit after placing his hand on King Charles’ arm.
Donald Trump has once again raised eyebrows during his state visit to the United Kingdom—this time over how he greeted King Charles at Windsor Castle.
The former president and First Lady Melania Trump landed in London on Tuesday evening (September 16) before beginning a busy schedule of royal ceremonies the following day.
The Greeting That Sparked Debate
On Wednesday (September 17), the Trumps arrived at Windsor Castle, where they were welcomed by Prince William and Princess Kate before meeting King Charles and Queen Camilla.
As Trump shook King Charles’ hand, he also placed his left hand on the monarch’s arm—a gesture that is generally discouraged under royal protocol.

According to ITV, Buckingham Palace notes that while touching the King isn’t strictly forbidden, etiquette guidelines suggest keeping greetings limited to a simple handshake—no hugs, pats on the back, or additional arm touches.
Not the First Time
Trump had already been criticized earlier in the day for walking ahead of King Charles during a guard inspection, something considered a breach of etiquette. By tradition, guests and even members of the Royal Family are expected to walk behind the King, in line with rank and order of succession.

Other public figures have also slipped up in similar ways. Music star Ed Sheeran once made the same gesture during a 2017 meeting with Charles, later recalling that the King “wasn’t bothered” and even asked him about his music career.
What’s Next on Trump’s Visit
Despite the etiquette missteps, the Trumps continue their state visit through Thursday (September 18). Highlights of the trip include:
A visit to Queen Elizabeth II’s tomb at St. George’s Chapel
Lunch with the royal family

A Beating Retreat ceremony featuring a flypast of U.S. and U.K. F-35 jets and the Red Arrows
A lavish state banquet at Windsor Castle
Whether or not these minor breaches of tradition matter, Trump’s interactions with King Charles have once again kept him firmly in the media spotlight.
