Trump praised Kirk as someone who “understood the heart of America’s youth better than anyone” and expressed condolences to his wife, Erika, and their family.

In the aftermath of Kirk’s death, major news networks covered the tragedy. During MSNBC’s coverage, political analyst Matthew Dowd made remarks that quickly caused outrage.
Speaking with host Katy Tur, Dowd described Kirk as “one of the most divisive young figures”, accusing him of pushing hate-filled rhetoric. He added:
“Hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions… that’s the environment we are in.”

MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler released a statement apologizing for the analyst’s words:
“During our breaking news coverage of the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Matthew Dowd made comments that were inappropriate, insensitive, and unacceptable. We apologize for his statements, as has he. There is no place for violence in America, political or otherwise.”
