Conservative activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk has been assassinated during a public debate at Utah Valley University (UVU) on September 10.

The 31-year-old political figure was fatally shot in front of a crowd of around 3,000 people. His death was later confirmed by President Donald Trump, who called Kirk a “Legendary American Patriot.”

Trump also ordered flags across the United States to be flown at half-mast until Sunday evening, writing:

Who Was Charlie Kirk?

Charlie Kirk rose to prominence as one of the most well-known conservative activists in America.

At just 18 years old, he co-founded Turning Point USA (TPUSA) to promote conservative values in schools and universities.

Kirk was speaking under a white outdoor tent at UVU when the attack took place.

Witnesses reported that shots rang out roughly 20 minutes into his presentation. Just moments earlier, Kirk had been debating an audience member about gun violence and mass shootings.

When asked how many transgender individuals had been mass shooters in the past decade, Kirk replied:

Eyewitnesses and videos posted on social media captured the terrifying moment. Kirk recoiled in his chair as gunfire echoed through the courtyard.

Emma Pitts, a reporter from Deseret News, told the BBC:

“We all dropped to the ground. We stayed like that for about 30 to 45 seconds, and then everyone around us started running.”

Kirk was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

Police Investigation and Shooter’s Location

Police initially questioned two individuals, but both were released after investigators found “no current ties” to the shooting.

The Utah Department of Public Safety confirmed the attack is still an active investigation and that a manhunt is ongoing.

Authorities believe the shooter fired from the roof of UVU’s Losee Center, a building close to the courtyard where Kirk was speaking.
