The Tragic Attack
On August 22, 2025, 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee who fled the war with her family, was killed in a random stabbing attack on the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) Blue Line.
Police identified Decarlos Brown Jr., who was arrested just minutes later, as the suspect. He has since been charged with first-degree murder.
Chilling Surveillance Footage Released
Officials released train surveillance video showing Brown’s last movements before the attack.
Brown, wearing a red hoodie with the hood pulled up, sat quietly by the window.
He leaned against his hand, appearing calm but occasionally shifting his head.
Zarutska boarded at the next stop, headphones in, and took a seat directly in front of him. The two never interacted.
Moments later, Brown appeared to pull something from his pocket before suddenly stabbing Zarutska in the neck.
After the attack, Brown walked to the other end of the train, removed his hoodie, and exited as passengers rushed to help Zarutska.
She tragically died at the scene.
Suspect’s Background and Court Case
Brown has a reported history of criminal activity and mental health issues.
On August 23, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police confirmed him as the suspect.
He sustained minor injuries during the incident and was treated at Atrium Health before being taken into custody.
On August 29, a judge denied him bond and ordered a competency evaluation.
His next court appearance is scheduled for September 19, 2025.
Community and Official Responses
Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles called the case heartbreaking and urged respect for the victim’s family:
“This was a senseless and tragic loss. My prayers remain with her loved ones as they continue to grieve through an unimaginable time.”
She also emphasized the city’s commitment to public safety.
When asked about the case on September 7, President Donald Trump described it as:
“Horrible.”
