Mackenzie Phillips opens up about her decision to forgive her father after admitting to a traumatic 10-year incestuous relationship. Learn more about her emotional journey in her new book.

Mackenzie Phillips has bravely opened up about the traumatic relationship she had with her father, John Phillips, the famed singer from the 1960s group The Mamas & The Papas. In a new book titled Hopeful Healing: Essays on Managing Recovery and Surviving Addiction, Phillips shares her personal journey and explains why she chose to forgive her father for his role in an alleged 10-year incestuous relationship.

In her first memoir, High on Arrival, Phillips described how her father allegedly raped her when she was 19, the night before she was set to marry Jeff Sessler. Following this traumatic event, Phillips claimed the relationship between them turned consensual, continuing until she became pregnant and had an abortion. Phillips’ father passed away in 2001, but his legacy as a troubled musician continues to impact her deeply.

Despite the harrowing details, Phillips has shared why she decided to forgive her father, despite the immense pain he caused her. In her new book, she reflects on her father’s actions and writes, “Do I think that my father held me in his arms when I was a baby and thought, ‘I’m going to abuse my daughter some day?’ No. I think that a toxic combination of chance and circumstance and drugs and alcohol morphed into something dark and ugly.” This perspective helped her come to terms with the abuse and ultimately find peace in forgiveness.

Phillips had previously spoken about her father in interviews, notably with Oprah Winfrey in 2009, where she expressed that she didn’t “hate” him, acknowledging that he was a “very tortured man” who passed his torment onto her.

The decision to forgive was not easy for Phillips, and she has faced online criticism and trolling for showing compassion towards someone who caused her so much pain. However, she has clarified that forgiveness is a personal act for her own healing, not a sign of approval for his actions. “Forgiving is for me, not for the other person,” Phillips explained. “And forgiving doesn’t mean I cosign or agree with what I’m forgiving him for. It’s very complicated and yet I am at peace.”

In a conversation with her sister, Chynna Phillips Baldwin, on Chynna’s YouTube channel, Mackenzie described their father as “something else,” reflecting on the many layers to his personality. Chynna acknowledged their father’s complexity, recognizing both his musical genius and his darker side.
