Discover the heartbreaking story of Scarlett Jensen, a three-year-old tragically lost in a hit-and-run. A final photo, captured moments before the incident, preserves a memory of her peaceful last moments.
A photo taken just minutes before her untimely death has become an invaluable treasure for a grieving family. The heartbroken grandmother of three-year-old Scarlett Jensen, who was killed in a hit-and-run, shares her story of loss, healing, and the final moments captured in an innocent photograph.
The Unthinkable Tragedy
On October 7, 2022, Scarlett Jensen was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident while being looked after by her grandmother in Oldtown, Idaho. Scarlett, along with her 2-year-old brother, Henry, was out for a walk with their grandmother when disaster struck. A Chevy Tahoe came speeding down the family’s private driveway, running over the children and their grandmother.
Despite the grandmother’s desperate attempts to move her grandchildren out of harm’s way, the vehicle was too fast. Scarlett was killed almost instantly, while her grandmother and Henry sustained critical injuries.
“I just couldn’t believe what had happened,” said Samantha Jensen, Scarlett’s mother. “My mother tried to move them, but it was too late. Scarlett’s life was cut short so suddenly, and Henry was seriously injured.”
The Aftermath and Recovery
The suspect driving the vehicle fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended miles away. The driver is now serving a ten-year prison sentence. Henry, critically injured, was life-flighted to a children’s hospital, where doctors discovered he had a fractured spine, six broken ribs, a broken jaw, and other severe injuries.
“Henry spent a week in the PICU and endured a full body brace for 10 weeks,” Samantha shared. “My mom also had several broken bones but was fortunate enough to recover enough to be released from the hospital.”

A Final, Peaceful Moment Captured in Time
In the midst of their overwhelming grief, Samantha discovered a seemingly ordinary photo that her mother had taken moments before the tragedy. This photograph, taken when Scarlett was picking flowers in the family’s driveway, became a symbol of her daughter’s joyful spirit.
“My mom had lost her phone when they were hit, and it took us some time to find it. When I found it and checked the pictures, I saw that the timestamp showed it was taken just five minutes before Scarlett’s death,” said Samantha. “It was such a bittersweet moment, knowing that this photo was taken just moments before her life was tragically taken.”
The picture was taken during a peaceful moment when Scarlett’s grandmother had taken her and Henry out for ice cream. When they returned to the driveway, Scarlett, excited by the flowers, wanted to step out of her stroller. That moment was captured forever in the last photo of her life.
A Mother’s Grief and Healing Journey
In the months following Scarlett’s death, Samantha and her family have been navigating their intense grief. Some days are easier, but others are unbearably hard. “Some days, I feel like I’m drowning in my grief, and on others, I’m able to stay afloat,” Samantha shared. “Therapy and my faith in the Lord have been vital in helping me heal. I’m learning to live through the pain.”
Although the memory of the final photo was painful at first, Samantha now views it as a cherished reminder of Scarlett’s carefree spirit. “I’m so thankful for that photo. It shows Scarlett in her final moments, surrounded by the peace and beauty of nature. I’ll forever remember her picking flowers with her Meemaw, smiling and happy.”
A Peaceful Memory
Two years later, Samantha has come to see that image not as a symbol of tragedy but as a beautiful reflection of Scarlett’s life. “I’ll always picture her as the joyful, carefree little girl she was — picking flowers with her best friend, Meemaw. That’s how I’ll remember her forever.”
Rest in Peace, Scarlett
While the pain of losing Scarlett will never fade, this final photo serves as a comforting reminder of the love and joy she brought to her family during her short life. Rest in peace, Scarlett.
