Stites, now 33, met Thomas while they were both students. Though she initially found him “awkward,” she never anticipated the harrowing turn their relationship would take. Despite her clear rejections, Thomas relentlessly pursued her with constant messages and unwelcome attention.

In 2014, Stites took legal action, obtaining a six-year personal protection order (PPO) against Thomas. However, once the order expired, the harassment began anew.

By 2022, Thomas’ obsession took a chilling turn. He kidnapped Stites from her home and imprisoned her in a soundproof underground bunker he had built specifically for her. The space, according to investigators, was stocked with supplies designed to hold her captive for an extended period.

Thomas, it was later revealed, had drawn inspiration for the bunker from the Netflix thriller You.

For 13 agonizing hours, Stites was confined to the dark, isolated space, unsure if she would make it out alive. But she had one thing that could help her survive: her quick thinking and crisis intervention training as a social worker.

“I had to remain calm,” Stites later shared in an interview with Good Morning America. “I knew if I didn’t, I wouldn’t make it out.”

During their interactions, Stites noticed a crucial detail: Thomas feared going to prison. She realized that his fear could be her key to freedom.

In a bid to convince him to release her, she engaged him in conversation and pretended to be open to a relationship. He made a horrific demand: he would let her go only if she agreed to sleep with him. Stites, desperate to escape, made a difficult decision.

“I said, ‘You promise me, Christopher, that if I sleep with you, you will let me out tonight,’” she recalled. “He looked me in the eyes and shook my hand.”

After the assault, Thomas kept his word and returned Stites to her home. She immediately went to the hospital, where doctors collected evidence of the assault. Stites then worked with police to locate the bunker and bring her captor to justice.

Within 48 hours, Thomas was arrested. He later pleaded guilty to kidnapping, torture, and aggravated stalking, and was sentenced to 40 to 60 years in prison. The sexual assault charge was dropped in exchange for his plea.

Stites’ story is a testament to the power of survival instincts and the importance of crisis intervention training. “As social workers, we take courses on crisis intervention,” she said. “My education and training definitely helped me think fast and know what to do in that moment.”

Her experience has now become the subject of a new Hulu documentary, where Stites hopes to raise awareness about the dangers of stalking, the importance of trusting your instincts, and how resilience can save lives.

“I want people to know that survival is possible, even in the darkest moments,” Stites said. “It’s not easy, but it’s important to keep fighting and trust your instincts.”
