Bears are intelligent, powerful, and remarkable creatures. Sadly, many are trapped in unimaginable suffering for human profit. One such bear, Caesar, endured years of cruelty on a Chinese bile farm before finally being rescued and finding peace—if only for a short while.
A Life of Unthinkable Cruelty
Caesar spent the early part of her life in a torture vest, confined to a tiny room on a farm in China. Her captors drained bile from her gallbladder around the clock to make traditional Chinese medicine. The restrictive metal vest, with spikes to prevent her from removing it, caused constant pain, while open wounds left her suffering from infections.
Her life was a living nightmare, a daily struggle just to survive. As Animals Asia described it:
“It’s the worst imaginable bile farm torture.”
Rescue and a New Beginning
In 2004, Caesar’s life changed. Animal advocates from Animals Asia rescued her, freeing her from the vest and providing the care she desperately needed. Over time, Caesar transformed from a fragile, wounded bear into a majestic, strong, and radiant animal.
Weighing 300 kg, she became a symbol of resilience and courage, living freely in Chengdu, swimming, sunbathing, and digging—activities she had been denied for years.
Nic Field, director of the China bear and veterinary team, remarked:
“To see her out in the sunshine – a dozen years on from her rescue – it’s hard to imagine her existence back then.”

Caesar spent more than a decade enjoying the simple pleasures of life: basking in the sun, swimming in pools, and climbing freely. Her scars faded, but her spirit remained strong, inspiring caretakers and animal lovers around the world.
However, despite her newfound freedom, the years of abuse left lasting damage. Caesar eventually developed an aggressive tumor, a tragic consequence of the repeated bile extractions she suffered. She passed away, leaving behind a story that is both heart-wrenching and inspiring.
The Ongoing Fight for Bear Welfare
While Caesar’s rescue brought hope, there are still an estimated 10,000 bears trapped in bile farms across China and Vietnam. Her story serves as a reminder of the cruelty that continues and the importance of supporting organizations fighting to free these animals.
Steve Jackson of Animals Asia emphasized:
“These metal jackets are now illegal, but it’s likely some still exist. We cannot turn away. Every bear deserves freedom.”
