A Texas man has been charged with murder after an 11-year-old boy, Julian Guzman, was shot and killed while playing the viral ‘ding dong ditch’ prank in Houston. The incident occurred on the night of Saturday, August 30, when Guzman rang the doorbell of a random house and ran away, as part of the prank. What was intended to be harmless fun quickly turned into a tragic event when the boy was chased and shot by a neighbor.

The ‘ding dong ditch’ prank involves ringing a doorbell and running before the homeowner answers, a game that has become popular with children over the years. Unfortunately, the prank ended in a fatal shooting when, according to witnesses, a man chased Guzman down the street with a weapon before firing multiple shots at the child.

Houston Police confirmed that the young boy was pronounced dead by doctors on Sunday, August 31, as the investigation into the shooting continued. In a statement, the police department confirmed, “Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a juvenile male in the 9700 block of Racine Street about 10:55 p.m. on Saturday (Aug. 30).”

The suspect, identified as Gonzalo Leon, was arrested on Tuesday, September 2, and charged with murder. The police suggested that evidence from the scene does not support a claim of self-defense, with Sergeant Michael Cass stating, “In my opinion, it does not look like any type of self-defense. It wasn’t close to the house, so it’ll more than likely be a murder charge.”

Witnesses at the scene reported that Guzman was ringing doorbells in the area and running away when he was shot. One neighbor, shocked by the event, shared their disbelief, saying, “What harm could they have done? Playing with a doorbell? That’s the part that really kind of hurts the heart. For someone to shoot him in the back, they knew they were a kid. What’s the purpose of it?”

The incident has left the community shaken, and the motives behind the shooting remain unclear. Leon’s plea and legal representation are not yet known, as the case is still under investigation.
